Square Enix's Shadow of the Tomb Raider is showcasing some impressive environmental graphics in a behind-the-scenes video about just how realistic the latest game will be. Players will finally see Lara Croft adopt her Tomb Raider mantle in the rebooted series and it looks like the developers have spared no expense in getting her there.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the third game in the Survivor Timeline that was started back in 2013. Charting the days of a younger Lara Croft, voice actress Camilla Luddington portrayed the character in the first two games and will again return to round off the trilogy based on the famous video character. Shadow is still shrouded in mystery, but thanks to the upcoming E3 Expo and a series of behind-the-scenes videos, developers are teasing gamers with what's to come later this year.

Posted on the official Tomb Raider YouTube channel, the 55-second video includes a brief introduction from Eidos Montreal’s Senior Technical Artist Martin Palko before he explains what's new this time around.

Back in the day, players had to battle with crudely-constructed bears and stare at the unimaginative walls of dark caves. In 2018, Eidos Montreal promises a more realistic take on atmospheric effects as the team takes into account how everything from fire to water should look. Although Palko only has time for a quick explanation, the video's most impressive footage comes when explaining how an oil slick reacts with water in Shadow.

Set to be one of the biggest games at this year's E3 expo, this is the latest behind-the-scenes video to help hype Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The clip reminds everyone exactly how much work went into making Lara's biggest adventure yet look as realistic as possible, and with $100 million reportedly being spent on Shadow of the Tomb Raider, it shows players where some of that money has gone. Things have certainly come a long way from Croft's debut back in 1996.

Launching on Windows PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox, Lara Croft will be making the most of next-gen computing and its impressive capabilities for running highly visual games. Fans have only had a brief look at Shadow's cinematic teaser trailer, but those attending E3 are able to get hands-on with the concluding chapter of Lara's latest legacy. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is pulling out all the stops to reinvent the long-running series again ahead of its September 14 release.
